World Teachers' Day: Payment structure of teachers globally.

Who is a teacher? A teacher (also called a school teacher) or educator is a person who provides education for students. The role of teacher is often formal and ongoing, carried out at a school or other place of formal education.

According to recent data released by OECD, the starting salary for a high school teacher in Luxembourg with no experience in the country is about $73,000. The peak salary for a veteran teacher in Luxembourg is $131,000. This data released by OECD shows a wide margin between the highest and lowest paid teachers around the world. Below is a list of teachers' payment structures in 20 countries:

10 Best:

Luxembourg ($73,000 - $131,000)
Ireland ($43,000 - $70,000)
Korea ($25,000 - $65,000)
Germany ($55,000 - $63,000)
United States ($45,000 - $63,000)
Austria ($40,000 - $63,000)
Japan ($30,000 - $61,000)
Canada ($42,000 - $59,000)
Netherlands ($$43,000 - $57,000)
Sweden ($43,000 - $54,000)

10 Worst:

Greece ($22,000 - $38,000)
Chile ($18,000 - $25,000)
Mexico ($15,000 - $22,000)
Turkey ($19,000 - $21,000)
Estonia ($18,000 - $20,000)
Czech Republic ($16,000 - $18,000)
Slovak Republic ($14,000 - $16,000)
Poland ($13,000 - $16,000)
Hungary ($10,000 - $16,000)
Colombia ($6,000 - $9,000)

However, the OECD data shows how much variance exists around the world, not just in what teachers normally earn, but in how much or little their salaries can increase with time. Only in Luxembourg, one of the richest countries in the world, can an inexperience teacher expect to make more on her first day than teachers in other countries can hope to make in their entire careers.

Hence, Quality teachers are key to sustainable global development and their welfare should a top priority. Motivation is critically important to get the best out of our teachers.
